Reiki is an Experience

Reiki is a form of energy healing administered by laying of hands. The practice began in Japan in the early 1920s and it's based on the idea that "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. It's not religious, but practitioners can incorporate their own spiritual practices into this healing art.

A reiki student receives an attunement to the energy from a reiki master. During this ritual, the teacher opens the energy-centers in the student's hands and other areas to allow them to channel reiki energy from the universe. From here, the student is encouraged to practice self-reiki every day and they can channel this energy to others, with their consent. Unlike faith-healing, the recipient of reiki healing doesn't have to believe in it. They can consent as a skeptic, but reiki will still assist them in healing.

Reiki activates your intuition to guide you to being your best self. It cannot be used for harm, and while it may bring to light other spiritual gifts, the practice itself isn't occult or mystical. Some practitioners use their intuitive gifts more than others, but there are clinical hand positions and anatomy lessons for those who are more grounded.

Each practitioner will have their own style, and it's heavily influenced by the lineage of teachers that shared the lessons and attunements with them. Reiki is usually administered while the client is sitting or lying down. During treatment, the channeler and the recipient hold the same healing intention, but the universal life-force energy does the work of balancing, cleansing, and recharging the recipient. Each person's experience is unique, but the idea is to enter a state of deep relaxation so your body, mind, and spirit can heal itself.

I'm a reiki master trained in the Usui/Tibetan System of Natural Healing. The information here is based on my experiences and the learning materials at Reiki.org. If you're interested in learning more, I strongly suggest experiencing it for yourself, and learning to practice it if you like it. Searching the Internet was overwhelming for me at first. Let your intuition guide you to the right instructor.
